The Indictment:
Poetry Most Critical
by Duane Robert Pierson - $10.95

“In these ninety poems Duane Robert Pierson indicts the entire human species contending it to be a stupendous destructive power that utilizes societal ignorance, consumerism, materialism, hedonism, superstition, and the dynamics of unrestrained capitalism, threatening the existence of itself and all living things”
When My Feet Quit Dancing
poetry on the personal side
by Duane Robert Pierson - $10.95

“ I started this book by reading Warblers in the Bramble, a poem that fits my experience, as does so much in the book. A friend very much likes Today in the Wood and we talked about moments that fail to repeat themselves. The Loss is a marvelous commentary. I once had to experience escaping emptiness and this poem gives that occasion form.
As usual in Duane Robert Pierson's books, there are so many beautiful lines that I immediately relate to, lines like:'Memories flutter like autumn leaves through the portals of my mind'.”

FIELD of WILDFLOWERS with GIRL
poetry of love, romance and related confusion
by Duane Robert Pierson - $10.95

“Duane Pierson’s love poems are full of longing, regret and passion remembered. ‘They do not go out, / these memory fires’, but burn in the pages of this accomplished book. The poems manage to be cerebral and sensual at once, and sometimes downright sexy, but never too explicit or crude. ‘Loves long gone/fill my vault of memories.’ These carefully crafted poems have a lot of sadness, but also celebrate the many loves long gone. This is a book that will appeal to both young and mature readers who appreciate fine poetry full of true feeling.”

FROGS, DOGS, and ECLOGUES
Poetry, Rural and Pastoral
by Duane Robert Pierson - $12.95
These poems emanate from the lifetime experiences of the poet, from rural living to nature study. They comprise four sections:
Idyllic as in Rustic – Poems that reflect life on the farm, many from a long gone era of primitive farming. They give us a picture of a world that once was and cannot be again
Wild Things – Reflections on things in nature, wild beings as different as a gentle flower and a grizzly bear
Too Precious – Animal friends. We all know them, the creatures that come in to brighten and share our lives
Forces Become Seen – Interactions of life and the natural world. The affirmation is that in nature all things remain in transition. Although the elements of nature appear static, there are in reality continual life cycles with natural forces affecting them.
The poems by Duane Robert Pierson in his fourth and latest collection Frogs, Dogs, and Eclogues – Poetry, Rural and Pastoral have titles like “Under the Red Raspberry Bush”, “Vernal Pond in Winter”, “Graveyard in the Woods” and “The Bookstore Dog”. These are familiar subjects approached by Pierson in a singular way. The reader will recognize the landscape and will discover a hidden nook they may have overlooked a hundred times before.
. In one poem, about a redheaded woodpecker, Pierson describes an old birch with “ruffled bark.” How perfect. A poem titled “When Snow Ends” opens with the lines “Follow a single drifting flake/whispering of infinity/ as it settles to rest among billions.”
Section three focuses, in part, on dogs, specifically Wicket whose name is the title of one of the poems. This poem closes with, “Woeful eyes/extort a ransom/of pity/quelled by half/my precious cookie.” Who hasn’t been there?
At first a title “Ode to a Turtle Crushed on a Highway” put me off because of the upsetting familiarity of animals run over on our roads. The reward of reading it was in Pierson’s’ apt idea of the turtle’s viewpoint tied into a broader view of its fate in a mechanized world.
There is a lot to savor in Pierson’s new collection, including a nine-line poem simply called “Spring Flowers”. There is more to this poem than is suggested by the title. I’ll leave the pleasure of discovery to the prospective reader.
In case you’re unsure of the meaning of “eclogue”, as I was, it refers to a pastoral poem descriptive of rural life.”

When Young Men Die: Poetry of War
by Duane Robert Pierson - $12.95

The poems in this volume are products of the poet's mind.
Many touch on his life and experience, however he makes no personal
claim to the actual combat experiences as depicted herein. He
honors all who have given service throughout history and it
is his desire to have known through his talents what they accomplished,
endured, and sacrificed. He firmly believes that all good war
poetry is anti-war poetry. No one detests war more than a warrior.
Finally, he also is certain that there will always be times
when one must stand against evil and aggression.
"I received your AWESOME book.....
I have read it, not putting it down until I finished it......
You are a talented poet....
Thank you, from my heart....."
- Poet and editor Yvonne Legge,
Angelfire (her war poetry webpage)
"War is a very hard business. Its essence is almost impossible
to catch. Poets often try. Pierson does a good job bringing us
the glory, horror, drudgery, and inevitably - the sorrow."
- Captain William V. Schmitz, USMC, Ret.
"Duane Pierson's When Young Men Die is a powerful book that
will engage your mind and break your heart. This poetry is full
of the sights, sounds, smells and memories of war - ranging from
Roman times to the Civil War, World War II to Vietnam and our
recent wars in the Gulf. As the daughter and granddaughter of
career military officers and veterans, I found this book particularly
poignant and emotional. It is impossible not to be stirred and
saddened by such eloquent gems as "Finally", "A
Soldier's Dreams", and "Lamentation for Dead Heroines."
This last poem is the searing true story of women who gave their
lives resisting the Nazis. Then there is the very moving "Equitatus
Recognitio", a poem commemorating the untold numbers of horses
who gave their lives in battles down the ages. I wish all politicians
and generals could be required to read this book. It is a beautifully
crafted treatment of sadly universal themes."
- Alice Persons

"Duane's poetry explodes with the truth, sadness and somehow,
even the terrible beauty of war. Haunting, powerful and unforgettable."

Ode to Frieda
by Duane Robert Pierson - $10.95
Those who grow up in happy homes recollect happiness and security.
The author of Ode to Frieda paints a picture wherein we observe
that a childhood in a dysfunctional family provides its own
consequences. However, these do have potential to be treacherous
in that they can prove harmful to the development of a person's
psyche and personality. On the other hand, they present lessons
that those raised within a conventional setting can never experience.
Poet Duane Robert Pierson takes us on an intimate seven-year
journey with a boy and his mother, a trip involving war, death,
tragedy, passion, love, and uncertainty. It was a time not so
long ago, yet one that seems so very far away.

On Reviving a Lost Revolution
by Duane Robert Pierson - $12.95

This
poetry is an uncompromising criticism of materialistic America,
the most powerful since Howl, and more artistic. The
revolution of which he speaks is the one that humankind has waged
forever against aristocracies of privilege and wealth, and against
entrenched authority denying freedom and opportunity to the common
person.
The forces of militarism, fundamentalist religion, and unrestrained
capitalism, now have resurged and prevail in this ancient struggle.
Recently we witness the erosion of egalitarian gains that started
with Wat Tyler’s Peasant’s Rebellion in 1381, the
achievements for humankind earned during the great nationalistic
revolutions in England, America, and France, and the reforms of
the Progressive Era, the New Deal, the Great Society. One cannot
read these poems and not come to believe that humankind is in
the midst of a great existential dilemma.
Pierson’s
poetry is strong, aggressive, and lyrical. It is politically neutral.
He asserts he does not write poems for poets but for the common
person. He prefers poetry as a medium because it is precise, feeling
that within prose ideas get lost in a flood of words. It is his
hope that poetry will once again convey ideas to the public with
passion, becoming the forceful vehicle for communication that
it has been through the centuries.
